Ane Lyngsgaard is a basket maker, craft artist, and designer whose work is rooted in a deep fascination with natural materials. What began with a focus on willow has gradually expanded to include other organic materials—and today, her practice is guided by what the eye discovers and the hands shape.
Through her work, Ane explores how traditional craftsmanship can be used to give basketry new dimensions and to tell new stories. She is driven by a desire to challenge and expand the expressive possibilities of weaving while remaining firmly grounded in age-old techniques.
Over the years, it has become increasingly important to her to share the joy of working with materials from nature, as well as the sense of calm and immersion that craftsmanship can offer to those who take the time to listen. Ane has taught and communicated basketry for many years, both in Denmark and internationally. Since 2010, she has also been involved in developing new woven design projects in several African countries.
“My creative expression emerges in a process between my eyes, my hands, and my heart.”
Ane runs Pileriet, where she teaches traditional weaving techniques for use in contemporary design, as well as guiding her students in finding their own unique forms of expression. Ane trained as an art teacher in the mid-1980s, has worked with basketry since 1993, and graduated from the art school Århus Kunstakademi in 1996. Ane belongs to the group Baskets4Life, who represent the new wave of basketry in Denmark that began in the 1990s.
