Hans Strand - Manmade Land (Copy)

  • Bosjökloster Slottsförvaltning Bosjökloster Slott & Trädgårdar Höör, Skåne County, 243 95 Sweden (se karta)

Since evolving into Homo Sapiens, humans have manipulated the world we live in. On May 1, we open the doors to Hans Strand’s spectacular photographs of landscapes transformed by humanity.

After a career devoted to photographing untouched wilderness, Hans Strand turns his gaze toward landscapes shaped by human hands. Manmade Land explores the profound and often unsettling impact of humanity on the Earth’s surface, seen from an elevated, aerial perspective.

From above, patterns of agriculture, mining and land use emerge as abstract compositions—simultaneously beautiful and disturbing. These images reveal landscapes formed not by aesthetic intent, but by necessity, geography and centuries of human intervention.

Strand’s photographs of Spanish dryland farming and the vast Rio Tinto mine in Andalusia trace humanity’s long history of reshaping nature, from ancient agricultural practices to industrial-scale extraction. The result is a body of work that invites reflection on sustainability, responsibility and the fragile balance between progress and preservation.

Manmade Land is both a visual experience and a quiet confrontation with the world we are shaping.

About Hans Strand

Foto Knut Koivisto

Hans Strand (b. 1955, Marmaverken, Sweden) is an internationally acclaimed landscape photographer. After a nine-year career in mechanical engineering, he devoted himself fully to photography in 1990—a decision he has never regretted.

Drawn to the forces that shape nature, Strand’s work is less a portrait of specific places than an exploration of movement, time and transformation. His photographs span environments from polar deserts and rainforests to vast arid landscapes. In recent years, his focus has shifted toward humanity’s impact on ecosystems, exploring water pollution and the visual language of man-made agricultural landscapes.

Hans Strand’s work has been widely published and exhibited internationally. He has received numerous awards, including the Hasselblad Master Award, and has published seven books, many addressing the relationship between people, nature and the environment.
