Skånska Operan - Figaro’s Wedding

The Scanian Opera stages "The Marriage of Figaro" in Bosjökloster’s rustic barn

Experience a masterful drama of relationships set to immortal music, blending comedy, gravity, and class struggle into a sharp, humorous critique of power and self-interest.

In short, The Marriage of Figaro follows Figaro and Susanna, servants to the Count and Countess Almaviva, as they plan their wedding. However, the Count, having fallen for Susanna, tries to delay the marriage. With the help of the Countess and the young page Cherubino, Susanna and Figaro plot to outwit the Count and ensure their wedding goes ahead. After a series of misunderstandings, disguises, and comic entanglements, the Count is ultimately reconciled with his wife, and Figaro and Susanna are free to marry.

The opera is based on a play by Beaumarchais, which was controversial when it was written in the late 18th century for promoting the idea that servants were as worthy as their masters, and that women should have the right to control their own lives. In this production, the Scanian Opera set the story on a modern cruise ship, where the captain — like the Count — holds authority over the lives of the other characters. The isolated setting adds to the intrigue: once at sea, there is no easy escape, whether from poor working conditions or unwanted advances…

The performance is indoors, sung in Swedish, and lasts approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes including intermission.
